Rampant Roosters

A traditional Mummers play and Morris Dancing performed by Dorking's Rampant Rooster Morris provided festive fun entertainment and delighted crowds gathered at the Duke's Head Brockham and The Black Horse Reigate Heath on Boxing and New year's day. Mummers' Plays have been performed in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland for hundreds of years. The principal characters are St. George, Captain Slasher, The Turkish Knight, and a Doctor who enters and demonstrates his skill by resuscitating the Turkish Knight! The play performed by dancers, musicians and family members of the Roosters was followed by a display of Cotswold and Border Morris dances.

Over £150 was raised from the two days which will be donated to local charities. Sheila Grey squire of the Roosters said “ We had great fun with the audiences this year in what has become an annual tradition for the Roosters, we were delighted with the support and generosity of the public and would like to thank the Dukes head and Black Horse for their support” Rampant Roosters Morris Dancing side was formed at Dorking in July 1993 as a mixed men and women Cotswold team. A sociable bunch, they have their own particular lively, fun approach to dancing and music and are always pleased to welcome new members. For further information visit www.rampantroostermorris.co.uk
